Block-Lite’s New Partnership with CarbonBuilt: Pioneering Sustainable Concrete Masonry Production

In a significant step towards sustainable construction practices, we here at Block-Lite, Flagstaff’s very own family-owned masonry business, are very proud of our reputation for quality. Now we’re ready to take it a step further and are excited to announce an innovative partnership with CarbonBuilt and Aircapture. This partnership brings together our expertise, CarbonBuilt’s alternative-cement process focused on reducing carbon footprint, and Aircapture’s technology that removes carbon dioxide from the sky. The collective goal of this collaboration is to revolutionize concrete production and pave the way for a greener future. With a target for production set in 2024-2025, the partnership has outlined a comprehensive plan to transition to sustainable concrete masonry production.

Breaking New Ground

The 4 Corners Carbon Coalition has recently announced the awarding of a $150,000 grant to Block-Lite. This grant is in collaboration with partners CarbonBuilt and Aircapture and aims to develop the world’s first fully-integrated direct air capture (DAC)-to-concrete assembly. With the project based at our plant here in Flagstaff, it holds immense potential to revolutionize the construction industry by producing market-rate blocks with a significantly lower embodied carbon footprint.

The innovative DAC-to-concrete assembly is poised to be a game-changer in sustainable construction. By incorporating direct air capture technology into the concrete production process, this partnership envisions a significant reduction in the embodied carbon of the final product. Preliminary estimates indicate a remarkable 70 percent lower embodied carbon compared to conventional concrete masonry, signaling a major milestone in the industry’s efforts to combat climate change.

We’re excited that our location here in Flagstaff is ideal for this groundbreaking initiative. With its state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to quality production, Block-Lite will be at the forefront of developing this fully-integrated DAC-to-concrete assembly, setting new standards for sustainability in the construction industry.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Construction

The importance of sustainable construction and reducing carbon emissions cannot be overstated. The concrete industry is a major contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions, making sustainable practices crucial for mitigating climate change. By significantly reducing carbon emissions, the partnership holds the potential for immense environmental impact.

As you may know, we are committed to sustainable practices. In addition to this new groundbreaking partnership, we have also made significant investments in solar panel technology in the last several years. These solar panels are utilized to power the Block-Lite factory and support our daily operations, further reducing our carbon footprint.

The partnership between Block-Lite, CarbonBuilt, and Aircapture serves as an inspiring example of how collaboration and innovation can drive sustainable practices in the construction industry.  By showcasing the success of this partnership and highlighting the benefits of sustainable construction, we hope to motivate and encourage other industry leaders to prioritize sustainability, thereby creating a positive ripple effect across the industry.
