DLR Group’s design for Marshall Elementary leans into CMU as a graphic surface rather than a structural expression — the Smooth block is painted in a palette of lime green, warm grey, and near-black, organized into fields and banding patterns that give the single-story building a scale and rhythm it would otherwise lack. The result reads as intentionally civic without the institutional weight that typically comes with masonry on a school. Sun Valley Masonry laid the block across a large footprint, and the consistent coursing through multiple painted zones and color transitions is what holds the composition together at the building scale.
