Butler Design Group’s renovation and expansion of Mount Elden Middle School works through material contrast rather than formal gesture — Ground Face CMU in San Diego Buff forms the primary wall surface, its aggregated texture giving the facade warmth and depth at close range while reading as a cohesive field from across the street. Split Face and Smooth CMU articulate secondary conditions, and a Spec Brik base course in a darker tone grounds the building to the site and separates the masonry program from the horizontal cladding above. Sun Valley Masonry executed the multi-texture spec across a large, complex footprint in a way that keeps the transitions clean and the coursing consistent.
