Project Background

Project Name: Starbucks Rte. 66
Project Location: 1688 E. Rte. 66 Flagstaff, AZ 86001
Date of Completion: November 20, 2015

This project was a new ground up gray shell building with drive through for a future Starbucks in
Flagstaff, Arizona. The site was tight and the site design needed to meet the Client’s, Starbucks’ and the City of Flagstaff’s requirements.

Design, Planning & Execution

To assist the client with cost we teamed up with another firm, a local Flagstaff architect, to be the designer and entitlement architect. Once entitlements were approved we coordinated with Starbucks and their Interior Architect to create the gray shell construction documents and shared the CA responsibilities.

The masonry materials used were a mix. 8x8x12 smooth face block, rich brown color, was used as the cap block for the top of the building wall. This wall consisted of 8x8x16 split face block, using a lighter brown color with an almost mid-height band of 2 stacks of 8x8x8 smooth face, with a red color, with a top and bottom band of 4x8x16 split face block, having a rich brown color. This band ran completely around the building but was broken up with proportionally located pilasters that consisted of 12x8x16 smooth face, with a rich brown color. Each pilaster had a cap block on the top and a wainscot block a quarter way from the bottom created with a 4x8x16 solid split face block, using a rich brown color. The bottom of all the dining area windows openings were detailed with 8x8x16 smooth face sill block, again using a rich brown color.

Aesthetic and Functional Achievements

The building design utilized a Starbucks’ floor plan layout. Together we created the shell building to work with the local character of Flagstaff. The building shell design utilized a mix of durable integral color smooth and spilt face concrete masonry block. The color tones and textures were selected to blend into the site and local area. The green awnings color selection intent was to replicate the green foliage in the area.

Client Satisfaction

The client appreciated Block-Lite’s collaborative approach, attention to detail, and ability to address challenges effectively. Our team demonstrated a deep understanding of the project requirements and worked closely with the client to ensure that their vision was realized while keeping with project requirements.

Sustainability and Environmental Considerations

The construction of the Starbucks on Route 66 project utilized concrete masonry blocks, which have a relatively low environmental impact compared to some other building materials. Their durability and low maintenance requirements contribute to their overall sustainability, making them a responsible choice for the project.

Since these concrete blocks were manufactured locally, transportation emissions for the project were greatly reduced.

Conclusion

Since this shop opened, the Starbucks parking lot has been constantly full. We think it is because of the exceptional design, use, and workmanship of masonry, blended with the thought of a delicious cup of Starbucks coffee.
